Beyond The Margarita, Delicious Mexican Alcoholic Beverages
To be sure, the margarita has its place in the hearts and stomachs of the world.
It’s a classically delicious adult beverage that can be prepared and enjoyed in a number of ways.
However, the margarita is not the only Mexican alcoholic beverage. If you’re in the mood to try something new with a Latin flare, consider the following cocktails.
Sangria
This bright red cocktail gets its name from the word ‘sangre,’ Spanish for blood. It is usually made with red wine.
Ingredients:
- 3 fl oz red wine
- 2 fl oz Spanish brandy
- 1 fl oz orange juice
- ice cubes
- soda water to top up
- 1 slice of orange or lime
- Sliced Strawberries
Directions:
1. Pour red wine, brandy and orange juice over ice cubes and sliced strawberries in an eight ounce highball glass. Stir well to mix.
2. Top with soda water and serve garnished with a slice of orange or lime.
3. Enjoy!
Tequila Sunrise
While it was originally created in Arizona, this drink quickly became a favorite.
There are actually more than ten different versions of the original, which was reportedly created in the 1930’s.
Ingredients:
- 2 fl oz tequila
- 4 fl oz fresh orange juice
- 2 teaspoons grenadine
- ice cubes
- 1 slice of orange
Directions:
1. Pour the tequila and orange juice into a cocktail shaker along with ice cubes. Shake well to mix.
2. Strain the mixture over ice cubes and pour into an eight ounce highball glass
.
3. Add the grenadine slowly by tilting the glass such that it goes to the bottom of the glass. It’ll look like a sunrise as the red grenadine gradually rises through the orange liquid.
4. Garnish with slice of orange and serve.
5. Enjoy!
Pina Colada
Translated it means strained pineapple. This cocktail originated in Puerto Rico in 1954 and has since gone onto fame including a mention in a 1970’s song by Rupert Holmes.
Ingredients:
- Light rum 3 oz.
- Coconut milk or coconut cream - 3 Tablespoons
- 3 tablespoons crushed pineapple
- 2 cups crushed ice
- Wedges of pineapple
Directions:
1. Blend the rum, coconut milk, crushed ice, and crushed pineapple on high for a few seconds. Be careful not to blend too long or you’ll end up with a smoothie.
2. Strain the mixture into a fourteen ounce Collins glass and adorn with pineapple wedges.
3. Enjoy!
