Be Bear Aware with Bear Spray - Bear Safety Measures

    By Mary Leave a Comment

Bear spray is just one of the essential bear safety measures and should be easily accessible at all times. A bear can show up when and where you least expect it. Be bear aware and be prepared!

I received the product mentioned below in order to facilitate my review. All opinions are 100% my own and may differ from yours.

Entering bear country can be a daunting prospect, but there are certain precautions you can take to minimize the risk of an encounter.

Bear spray is an essential piece of equipment, and it's important to know how to use it properly.

You should also be aware of bear safety measures such as making noise while you're hiking and storing food safely.

When camping in bear country, it's important to choose your campsite carefully and to take care with your food and trash.

By following these simple guidelines, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable trip to bear country.

Coming in contact with a bear isn't the first thing on anyone's mind unless you're hiking somewhere in Alaska or Yellowstone National Park.

However, with all the building of new houses going on, especially here in Florida, bears are becoming more known in populated areas.

Even at our property in Western New York, I never thought of seeing a bear. Deer, yes, but never a bear.

Well, that recently changed when my neighbor showed me his deer camera videos that he has set up.

Yep, turns out there are bears right in my backyard! Yikes! Not something I want to see at 6 am when I take the dog out.

They say they won't bother me and the dog, but I'm not taking any chances.

    Frontiersman Bear Attack Deterrent

Frontiersman Bear Attack Deterrent is made by SABRE. A few years ago we reviewed SABRE Pepper Spray products and were highly impressed with them.

In my opinion, you can never be too safe. Which is why when asked to review the Bear Spray products, I said of course.

The Bear Attack Deterrent we received came with a holster so that you can easily carry it on your belt while hiking or hanging out around the campsite.

The bear spray will fire up to 35 feet allowing for a greater distance between you and the bear.

I also like that the expiration date on the can is 3 years out. I don't have to worry about it expiring before our next trip.

We also received an Inert Training Unit. I think that this is great for those that have no idea how to use bear spray, like me!

I wanted to do a short video to show you how easy it is to use, but the wind here has been crazy.

As soon as the wind settles down, I will do one explaining and showing how to use it.

    Bear Safety While Camping

A few years ago, we went out west for a 6000-mile trip for my 60th birthday. I knew there would be bears and while my husband was always looking for one at Yellowstone, we did not see any.

However, we did meet a couple who came across a Black Bear and a Grizzly Bear. And they had the pictures to prove it.

The RV parks and National Parks all sold bear spray in the general stores, but once again, I figured we did not need it.

And for the past 45 years, we have been camping at Alleghany State Park in New York for the Memorial Day weekend with a group of about 50.

We started out in tents and I can remember seeing bears in the dumpsters in the evenings back then.

We had moved up to cabins and they have moved all the dumpsters to a fenced-in area with barbed wire.

This only means one thing, the bears had to find a different way to find their food.

Ah, what the heck, they figured they would just climb in the cabin windows!

Now we camp in our RV. But once again, that doesn't mean the bears won't try to get in when they smell food.

Some parks have bear boxes that you can rent for safety especially if you are camping in a tent.

If you do encounter a bear, do not run away. Stand still and make yourself look as large as possible.

If the bear does not see you as a threat, it will likely move on. If the bear does not back down, use your bear spray and aim for the bear's face.

Following these bear safety measures while camping will help to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip into bear country.

    Be Prepared Ahead Of Time

This year, we headed to the Smokey Mountains, and I was a little concerned about bears especially when I got the email from the RV park with Bear safety tips while camping there.

You know there are bears around when they have dumpsters that are bear-proof.

I wanted to be prepared ahead of time because I had heard from a few people that bears walked right through their campsite....at the campground we going to be staying at!

What I didn't realize is that there are a few states that do not allow bear spray to be shipped to you. And we were in one of them...New York!

So that meant I had to find somewhere to purchase it locally. I did find it online at Home Depot and it seemed that you could order it and pick it up in the store.

The Frontiersman Bear Attack Deterrent Spray is available online at SabreRed.com and online at Walmart and Amazon for shipping to most states.

    Bear Safety Measures Conclusion

Entering bear country always entails some risk, but there are bear safety measures that significantly reduce the possibility of an encounter.

The best bear safety precaution is bear spray, a powerful capsaicin pepper-based repellent that causes bears to back away. Bear spray should be readily accessible at all times while camping in bear country.

Another bear safety measure is to avoid cooking or eating in your tent; instead, set up your stove and table at least 100 yards from your sleeping area.

Finally, bear safety while camping also means making sure there is no food left out or in easy reach.

Store all food, garbage, and anything with a scent in bear-proof containers.
