Halloween Mummy Stromboli Recipe
Whether you are making this for a Halloween party or just for your family’s Halloween dinner, the yummy mummy is sure to be a hit with the whole family.
The great thing about Halloween time is that there are so many regular recipes that can be turned into Halloween themed food.
It's an easy food that will be a big hit at your dinner table. It isn't a very large stromboli, but you can make a few different ones with different ingredients.
Another serving suggestion is to make a vegetarian stromboli with a cheese mixture of several different types of cheese.
We served these at our pizzeria, however, we call them loafers.
Try this with our 3 Ingredient Mummy Meatballs and Jalapeno Popper Mummies.
What's The Difference Between a Calzone and a Stromboli
A calzone is when the pizza dough is folded in half and the edges are crimped.
The stromboli is when the ingredients are layered on the pizza dough and it is then folded over from each side like a baby in a blanket.
What Does a Stromboli Consist Of
A stromboli consists of a variety of cheeses and cold cuts. You can add any type of vegetables that your family likes too.
Can Stromboli Be Made Ahead of Time
The best thing about stromboli is that you can make it the day before. They say that stromboli is best served at room temperature. So whether you want to heat it up before serving it is totally optional.

Italian Stromboli Recipe Ingredients
- Dough Balls (store-bought or homemade dough works too)
- Provolone Cheese
- Salami
- Capicola
- 12 slices of Pepperoni
- Shredded Mozzarella cheese
- Italian Seasoning (optional)
- Parmesan cheese
- Pizza Sauce, tomato sauce, or Marinara sauce (for dipping)
- Black Food Coloring
- Gummy Eyeballs, or Candy Eyes (if you can't find either, you can always use Olive slices or cheese balls and paint eyeballs on with a food marker.)
- For exact amounts, please see the detailed instructions and printable recipe card below.
Whatever eyeballs you decide to use, just be sure they are edible eyeballs. I have seen some with plastic eyes and your food should never be made with non-edible items. You wouldn't want anyone accidentally eating one.
Optional Toppings
There are many optional toppings to choose from. I usually add everything to my shopping list so that I have enough ingredients on hand in case of a surprise company.
- Black olives
- Green Olives
- Mushrooms
- Sausage
- Banana Peppers
- Hot dogs
- Red Pepper flakes
- Garlic powder
- Red peppers
- Green Peppers
- Plain chicken and sausage mixture
- Sprinkle cheese
- or any of your favorite pizza topping.
Can I Use a Different Type of Dough
If you are like me and are not good with working with pizza dough, you can use a rolling pin to help spread out the dough or you can even make it with crescent rolls dough.
I have also made it with bread dough that I made in the bread machine. There are lots of options.
If using bread dough though, you may need to brush the top of dough with an egg wash.
How to Make Stromboli with Pizza Dough and Give it a Mummy Look
Heat oven to 350 degrees.
Sprinkle the work surface with all purpose flour so the dough doesn't stick.
Start by stretching out your ball of dough on a floured surface.
Once it’s in a large rectangle shape, layer your provolone cheese, salami, capicola, pepperoni slices, parmesan cheese, and shredded mozzarella.
Fold over one side and then the other.
Place on a prepared baking sheet covered with parchment paper, olive oil, or melted butter. Or spray cookie sheet with cooking spray.
Pour the food coloring into a small bowl. Brush the black food coloring across the top of the dough.
Sprinkle the remaining parmesan cheese over the top.
Stretch out your second roll of pizza dough and slice it into thin half inch strips with a sharp knife or pizza cutter. You don’t want wide strips because they will spread out a little while baking.
Take the strips of dough (mummy wrappings) and stretch them across the top as if to give it the appearance of a mummy, just to the side of the dough, leaving room for the eyes. Pinch edges so the cross strips stay in place.
Bake at 350 degrees F for about 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown like a pizza crust, depending on your oven.
Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes.
Place your gummy eyeballs or candy eyeballs in the space you left open.
Cut into slices and serve with marinara or pizza sauce.
Enjoy with a pumpkin cheese ball to make a complete meal. There are a ton of great recipes on the blog to choose from.
