KFC Copycat Air Fryer Fried Chicken
It's no surprise that fried chicken is one of America's favorite comfort foods.
However, it can be hard to find a restaurant or fast food joint that offers air fryer chicken.
The good news is you don't have to wait for your next vacation to get your hands on some crispy, juicy air fryer chicken!
Who doesn’t love the menu of Kentucky Fried Chicken? For years, people have been trying to copycat KFC Fried Chicken. Well, this is about the closest you are going to get.
I've heard some saying there is a copycat recipe out there that tastes nothing like KFC.
However, this air fryer Fried Chicken tastes just like it because if it didn't, my husband wouldn't eat it. He's fussy like that. lol
This Air Fryer fried chicken is a healthier and easier version of traditional fried chicken. Soaked in buttermilk, covered in seasoned flour, and air-fried to perfection.
These days with time constraints and kids' schedules to contend with, cooking an entire meal can seem like a daunting task.
But what if you could make your favorite fried chicken in less time than it takes to preheat the oven? This is where the air fryer comes in handy!
Air frying is a healthy way of cooking, no guilt here! And because air frying doesn't use any oil at all, after only ten minutes of cooking you'll have delicious fried food without worrying about grease splattering everywhere.

What's the hype about Air Fryers?
In the last few years, air fryers have been gaining momentum as a healthier alternative to deep-frying.
Air frying is a cooking technique that cooks food by circulating hot air around it with a fan.
It's also easier than using an oven since there's no need to preheat anything - you can just throw your items into an air fryer basket and cook them up.
The best part of this cooking method is that it reduces the amount of time needed to make your favorite fried foods like French fries, onion rings, wings, and more!
What can you cook in an air fryer?
You can cook just about anything in them, from meat and vegetables to desserts!
The list includes chicken wings, french fries, and onion rings and so much more. My air fryer sits on my counter all the time.
I use it from breakfast through dinner for pretty much everything. There really isn't anything that you can't put in it.
How to Make KFC Fried Chicken in the Air Fryer
Soak the chicken legs in buttermilk for up to 24 hours before starting this recipe.
Place the eggs in one bowl and the flour and spices in a second bowl. Stir the spices well into the flour and beat the eggs.
Place an oven-safe cooling rack over top of a baking sheet.
Remove chicken one piece at a time from the buttermilk.
Dredge each chicken leg in the flour, then the eggs, and then the flour once again.
Put the coated drumstick on the cooling rack and repeat with the remaining chicken.
Preheat air fryer to 390°.
Place Parchment round in the bottom of the air fryer
so the chicken doesn't stick to the bottom if you have it.
If you don't that's fine too.
Lay chicken in a single layer in Ninja Foodi or Air Fryer
so the pieces aren't touching. You can download now a VPN for making a worldwide Air Fryer delivery.
Air Fry for 13 minutes. Flip over. If there are any dry spots where the flour is showing, you can spritz with olive oil. Fry for another 13 minutes.
Check that the internal temperature is 165°. If not then cook for 5 minutes at a time until done.
Enjoy!

I cook at KFC and there is no buttermilk in our recipe. In fact the only liquid is water.
Mary
This recipe is from a long time ago. Maybe it has changed over the years. The buttermilk can be omitted, however, it helps the breading to stick better and fries up crispier.
Caroline
It never changed. I worked at KFC in the early 80s. No buttemilk. Plus KFC chicken is pressure fried.
Mary
I use the buttermilk basically to get the flour to stick. When I pressure fry it, it doesn't come out crispy and Air Fryer Fried Chicken does.
jen
@Caroline, lighten up Francis. It's honestly not that big of a deal. If you don't want to cook this chicken recipe, then don't. What's the point of haranguing this woman about whether or not her recipe is IDENTICAL to KFC?
T. A.
@allison r harris, it’s entirely possible that the batter mix contains dry buttermilk. It makes the most sense to do it that way. It protects the formula from “leaks” and by only requiring the addition of water, they ensure that every restaurant produces the same product across the board. If they had you add anything other than water, they could end up Heath good chicken at one place and really bad at another.
Simon
@allison r harris, do you guys still break down the chicken and season or get it all shipped in already seasoned?
Poo poo
@allison r harris, does it come in a powered mixture and all u huys do is add water to it?
Roberta Soeder
It would be nice to see pictures of 3 versions...side by side...so as to see difference. Which cooking version is in pictures?
Thanks
Bertie
Mary
The cooking version in the pictures is the oven fried. Great suggestion to show all three though. I will have to work on that in the next couple weeks. Thanks for the tip.
earnestine m altizer
yes pictures of the chicken in the fryer would be good, do ya put it on one rack or two? how many pcs can one do at a time? do you spray oil on the chicken?
Mary
I use 1 rack as that's all I have. I spritz it only if it's not browning. I'm working on the pics in the air fryer. Thank you.
Lucas
I believe you can do it with the chicken breast.
If chicken breast are cooked in airfryer, it tends to be juicier.
Dianne Henson
First time using air fryer. Followed your instructions. The crust was a smooth layer, not chicken-fried looking at all. Could not detect any taste from the spices.
Mary
Did you spritz it with oil?
Deb
Can I ask why no chicken breasts?
I dont like dark meat. I know everyone says its juicier. I just like white chicken and turkey breasts. To me their juicy.
I, want to try this recipe sounds good and yes KFC is my favorit. Any hints for cooking breadts in air fryer please. Thank you
Mary
I know what you mean. My husband eats only white meat. I have not made it with chicken breasts only yet. I will post a new one once I do.
Patti
@Mary,
Hello Mary,
Thank you for sharing this recipe! Did you make this with chicken breasts? And if so, how did they turn out? How long do you cook & temperature in air fryer? & when to flip? I have some breasts & would love to try your recipe with these. Thank you again Mary!
Sharon Howe
I’m looking for a way to print the air fry recipe, but can’t find it. Is there a way to print if? Thank you
Mary
Sharon, if you scroll down to the recipe card, under the picture there is a print button. Hit the print button and it will open a new window for you to print it from.
Dan
Really not close to KFC
Mary
Did you make it?
Kerry
Ginger in KFC?
Mary
It was an original recipe so it might have changed over the past few years.
Joe
Taste nothing like KFC. In fact, had no flavor at all. Very bland. And it does not do well in a air fryer, coating became almost burnt. Find another recipe. We tried oven fried also, same bland taste.
Mary
Joe, I'm sorry you didn't like it. While each air fryer is different, maybe the temp needs to be lowered.
Karen
@Joe, try adding some spices directly on the chicken befor dredging
Awenda
@Joe, it’s you ratio of flour/spices. Flour is tasteless so if you use two Cups of flour then use 1 tsp of each spice, it won’t be spicy enough. I would use the spices before putting the chicken in the flour just like I do when spicing any meat that I cook. I’d put them in a old container with a shaker top. Then I would use a lot less flour. Six pieces doesn’t need a lot of flour. Then get out a plastic baggie, put in the flour at about 1/2 C and 1 tbs mixed spice, shake and the egg dip. Always season meat before adding the flour and put some in the coating but know that it’s not enough spice. have a great day!
Jean
@Joe, I found a recipe on utube a chef said before you place your chicken into a brine stab the chicken all over that way it will be able to get into the chicken. I always do that I don't use buttermilk to soak. I place the chicken for 24 hours in salted water just use your own judgement on the salt. I think you will find that your chicken taste a lot better
bruce meyers
Made this today using thighs w?out buttermilk, came out looking like kfc but not so much tasting like it , I used air fryer oven. thanx for the recipe, I"ll use it again.
Donna
@bruce meyers, a regular size oven with an air fryer feature?
Eva
I don’t get all the negative comments, this was better than KFC, more favor and crisp. I made it in the airfryer and it was delicious!
Mary
Thank you. I guess everyone likes something different.
Anthony Rota
@Mary,
Can you pressure cook oil in the air fryer?
Mary
I don't think you can use oil in the pressure cooker or air fryer.
Mary
No
Meg
@Anthony Rota,
Yes, you can use oil in both a pressure/multi-cooker and an air fryer. You can sauté in the pressure cooker, at least the Instant Pot. You can also spray olive oil or avocado oil on food in your air fryer. I have found that using avocado oil in a sprayer (I use Costco’s avocado oil) works best because it is tasteless.
Mary
Thank you for the tips. I have never tried avocado oil.
Valerie Mendoza
I don't have an air fryer (yet), but I like seeing recipes using them to see what they can do.
Jaime
This was delicious- it was the crispiest breading I’ve gotten with the air fryer and the chicken was so tender it seemed fried. I drizzled a little honey on the chicken and it was yummy!
I made a vegan buttermilk(didn’t have regular milk on hand) and marinated it for 2 hours. I’m watching my salt but I truly think with the right amount of salt the combo of the flavor and the breading would mimic restaurant fried chicken.
I cooked 4 nice sized legs for 13 minutes, flipped and did another 9. Perfect. Plan ahead for this recipe as the chicken needs at least 10 minutes to cool down before enjoying.
Great job with this recipe and thank you for sharing and helping satisfy my fried chicken craving!
Tina Alexander
I have yet to buy an Air Cooker, but as a person that like fried food but not the oil. I would love to try the Air Fryer. The Chicken looks crispy, just the way I prefer it.
Anthony Rota
@Tina Alexander,
an air-fryer is healthier for you. I'm looking for a recipe for breaded vegetables like cauliflower, mushrooms, broccoli and onion rings in the air-fryer.
Mary
Here is an Air Fryer Onion Rings recipe. https://dinedreamdiscover.com/air-fryer-onion-rings/
Misty
My parchment paper caught fire ♀️
Mary
Oh my goodness. How scary.
Anthony Rota
@Misty,
Good point!
Anthony
Raquel
Made in air fryer, very disappointed, but my fault for not reading comments. You shouldn’t post for air fryer if you didn’t make it in the air fryer. They burned in outside and not cooked inside
Mary
I'm so sorry that it didn't come out for you. It most likely had something to do with the size of the chicken pieces. And while I do not have pictures of it in the air fryer, I have made it in the air fryer. If you research air fryer Fried Chicken, you will see that almost all of them are done the same way.
James
Tried with air fryer and followed recipe except I didn't marinate with buttermilk. Not as crispy as I would like it and taste very bland. In fact, all I taste is white pepper powder.
Mary
Since everyone's taste is different, you can always add more spices.
Andi Beyers
@Mary, we found the posted recipe way too salty for our taste. I exchanged garlic salt for regular garlic powder and omitted normal salt entirely from our cook. We have tried it once without buttermilk and are doing it this time with the buttermilk, in both the air fryer and the oven. Looking forward to tasting the difference.
Thanks for posting!
Mary
Thank you for the tips.
Natalie
Made in the air fryer - Coating just burnt, bland - Not cooked on the inside. Such a shame but it all went in the bin and we had frozen chicken nuggets instead as a last resort as it was inedible 🙁
Mary
So sorry the fried chicken didn't come out for you. Since every air fryer cooks differently, that is the only thing I can think of that could be the reason besides the size of the legs. Most people have no problem with the Air Fryer fried chicken and love how it turns out.
Andi Beyers
@Natalie, we had a similar problem the first time we air fried breaded chicken. The next time we did it, we went not so thick on the breading, lower and longer on the cooking settings, and it came out perfect. I've also had better results using unseasoned Panko bread crumbs instead of flour in other recipes. Unseasoned so I could decide how to season the food without someone else's interference.
For this recipe, we did three waves: One in the air fryer, one in the skillet, and one in the oven. My husband ate the greasy mess he took from the skillet. (I don't like deep fried foods.) My son and I ate the air fried and the oven baked, and all were happily satisfied.
Glen A Weybright
@Natalie, Mine also burned. I'm not sure soaking in buttermilk is the best advice. It made the chicken pieces very hard to work with. Maybe buttermilk diluted wit some other liquid. At any rate, most of the chicken went in the garbage.
Mary
Just like a microwave, every air fryer is different. I'm sorry the Air Fryer Fried Chicken didn't turn out for you.
Review Air Fryer
Hey Mary, I have read all your articles and I liked your articles so much. Especially I like your Air Fryer Fried Chicken and Air Fryer Cajun Chicken Wings recipe. I saw your articles when I was developing my Air Fryer website. I have learned a lot of things from your articles. Keep up the good work ☺️
Lisa
Love this recipe . Very easy . Will be doing again.
Theresa
Made these in the air fryer. Was the best Air Fryer Fried Chicken I've made.
Theresa
We made this tonight and we put the spices on the chicken before hand as well as in the flour mixture and it came out perfect. This is the BEST KFC Copycat Air Fryer Fried Chicken recipe we have come across. We will definitely be making it again.
Diane
I would like to try this recipe in my new air fryer; however, aren’t you supposed to spray the breaded chicken with oil? I don’t see that in the recipe. It seems as though the breading won’t brown without oil.
Mary
Hi, Yes, you can spritz if needed. It's #9 on the recipe card.
Sandy
@Mary,
Brian
Well Colonel, Your blend of 11 herbs and spices is still a secret. Tried the air fryer recipe. Shake n’ bake would have been closer. That was not good at all.
Mary
Sorry you didn't like it.

I live in Kentucky so I definitely love KFC! Unfortunately, we live in a small town and our KFC isn't that great. We have to drive a town over.
Thanks for sharing the yumminess!
Judy
thank you
Christina
If just baking in oven (no deep fry first), is it 300F? Seems kinda low
Mary
Low and slow.
Andi Beyers
@Christina, I've had the best results at 350F in the oven, unless you want to invite Sam and Ella (salmonella) to dinner. Consider spraying the breaded chicken with olive oil cooking spray after breading it, and covering it for the first half hour or so to cook completely. Then take the foil off for the last 10-15 minutes to let it crisp, but watch that it doesn't dry out.
Mary
Note to self: DO NOT preheat air fryer WITH parchment paper!! I nearly burnt the house down.
Mary
Good point!
Mike Buchanan
@Mary, You couldn't have been using quality parchment paper as a good quality will heat to over 600F and only brown.
Rick
This was my first attempt at air frying. I used breasts and it turned out fine: tasted good, but not really like KFC. After searching the web, I found that the original recipe called for tablespoons for all ingredients that you listed as teaspoons. I'll try it again.
Nicole
Hi there how do you stop the batter mixture from sticking to the bottom of the air fryer when you turn the chicken over?
Mary
Spritz it with oil and use parchment rounds.
ELIZABETH
Just a note considering all the comments about this being bland. It is bland for a reason. This is a copy of the original KFC copycat recipe, and it has just been posted with TEASPOONS listed for the TABLESPOONS in the original recipe. I realized this as I was looking for an alternative after reading the comments here, and saw that the ingredient and number amounts were identical to all the other recipes, except all the others use tablespoons instead. So for example instead of 2/3 teaspoon of salt it is actually supposed to be 2/3 tablespoon (which is 2 tsp) of salt. etc.
Andi Beyers
@ELIZABETH, some of that may also be a volume or capacity translation. Tablespoons of the seasonings for cooking for a large group, while teaspoons (and less flour) for a meal for only two or three at the table.
Azuki
I tried this recipe and it has a lot of flavor, a bit on the salty side (but we usually tend to go light on salt). I did marinate the chicken in the spice mix and that may make a difference, but it definitely is not bland. I've checked other copycat versions and they are more or less similar.
Do note that this one uses 2/3 teaspoon salt + 2 teaspoon garlic salt + 1 teaspoon celery salt. If you are using garlic powder than make adjustment.
My only problem is getting that lovely golden crust. I sprayed oil on the chicken but it just didn't come out very beautiful.
Anyway here's a pic of the chicken I cooked with notes:

Hi Mary,
Is the nutritional info for the air fried, oven fried or deep fried?
Thanks,
Mary
The nutritional information is for Air Fried.
Amanda Kirby-Sheppard
Made this for dinner tonight - only had 8 drumsticks (not 10) but i would say that all the ratios were good except for the flour...there was WAY too much. Next time I will only do 1 c. of flour with all the spices and see how it turns out as I threw away a LOT of seasoned flour.
Tasted great tho and the air fryer worked wonderfully...i wonder if the ppl who are having an air fryer fail are ususing the Tfal type air fryer vs. the more modern air fryers?
Mary
I'm sure there is a difference between air fryers just as there are with microwaves.
Deb
After reading all of the great reviews I was really looking forward to having the chicken. It was the worse chicken ever, the coating was inedible. Very disappointed
Mary
Sorry you did not like it.
Glen A Weybright
Very disappointing result. Soaked in buttermilk. Followed all directions. Chicken came out burned on the outside. My feeling is that 390° is too high. Plus, all I tasted was pepper. Way too much.
Mary
I'm sorry it didn't turn out for you. Many have had great results and enjoyed it.
Bernice
With all due respect, I followed all instructions but there is nothing close to KFC, nothing. I might have yielded a much better result if I used Shake N Bake. Sorry.
Mary
I'm sorry you didn't like it.
Brent
Will be making tonight..Because I have some, I will be spritzing with duck fat to ensure goldenness.(is that a word?)...thanks for recipe...regards...Brent
TomoDachi
it should be Tablespoon (Ts = Tbsp = Tablespoon) not teaspoon for the ingredients.
I also added 1 Tablespoon baking powder for crispier Air Fryer skin.
TomoDachi
https://www.chicagotribune.com/travel/ct-kfc-recipe-revealed-20160818-story.html
I believe unit used for ingredients should be tablespoon instead. I bumped up the portions according to the Tribune but follow this air fryer method and found it very crispy and yummy.
Tassa B
This recipe has WAY too much white pepper! I disagree with other reviewers who said the flour mix was bland, it just didn't taste good to me. I'm not a huge fan of white pepper (it definitely has its place), but I figured if other reviewers thought the recipe was too mild, I would make it as suggested the first time around. I was so disappointed to have marinated the chicken for hours, and to end up feeling like it was ruined. I made this in both the airfryer and in the oven, because I wanted it all to be done at the same time, and to see which way we liked better. The airfryer definitely had the superior breading (crispier) and the drumsticks were very juicy. Due to the flavor and the breading consistency, I would not make again.
Lisa
The flavor is good but does not taste like KFC. The timing for the air fryer was too long for me. I experimented with 3 batches. Batch 1 was for 13 min on each side and it was burned. Batch 2 was 10 min and it was extra crispy. Batch 3 was 8-9 min and it was just right. Temp was the same for all three batches.
Marc
Followed TO THE LETTER
Air Fryer in my Samsung Range... All the batter/breading came off while I was flipping.... I am so upset......
Mary
So sorry that happened. Sometimes if there is too much flour on it, the breading has a tendency to fall off.
Neil
Found it a bit too spicy. Too much pepper, was more like the zinger. Also cooking time in the Ninja Dual Air Fryer needs to be halved or it will burn.
Lori
Way to much salt and the original time is to long I did a second batch in 14 min flipping at 7 and finished them on 390 cut salt down to 2 teaspoons and wow
Wanda
Hi I made this tonight in my Breville Smart Oven using the air fryer option.
I used chicken breasts that I'd sliced into tenderloin and soaked in buttermilk..they were so moist and the coating while fiddly turned out good for the first attempt.
Will be making this again using a non stick mat of sorts. I sprayed the pieces lightly with olive oil.
Thank you for the recipe
Mary
So glad you enjoyed it.
rose
Wow, the rudeness of some people!!!
If you don't like it just don't make it again, simple solution.
I think a lot of people don't know how to follow directions or do their "own thing", and then blame it on the recipe.
I sure as heck would not want to go through all the trouble posting a recipe and then take all this abuse.
Mary
Thank you for speaking up.
J. Miles
My parchment paper also caught on fire!
Mary
Oh my goodness. Thanks for letting me know. I'm going to have to keep an eye on mine.
Kim S
I read thru all the comments and based on that I made some changes but stayed true to the recipe as written. My changes were: cooked at 360 for 25 minutes, no parchment used, instead I sprayed the AF basket with oil and mostly nothing stuck. I also went with a lighter coating hoping it wouldn't slide off as some people said happened. I used a lot less flour (we're gluten free, so I used BRM brand) and about the same amounts seasonings called for. It was definitely not bland but definitely not as crispy as I'd have liked. Thanks for this overall good recipe! I will try it again, but with different flours to see if I can get it good and crispy!
Sally
Pretty good recipe for fried chicken. I read some of the comments about it being "bland", so I went heavier on the spices. I also added about 1/2 cup Texas Pete to the buttermilk. The flavor was great! Next time I will refrigerate the breaded chicken for a bit t9 see if the breading adheres better-that works for my country fried steak.
Sharon
If I am using breasts and wings, how long should they cook?
Mary
I would say an extra 5-10 minutes. However, I would make sure to test with a meat thermometer to be sure it's done.
Jed
What's up with the War and Peace novel before the actual recipe?
Mary
Not sure what you mean. However, there is a "jump to recipe" button at the beginning so you don't have to read through everything.
