What cut of Meat is Used for Gyros
Gyros are a popular Greek dish, but many people don't know that there are two variations of gyros.
The meat used in the traditional gyro is either pork or lamb, which is shaved off a vertical rotisserie spit.
However, for an American version of the dish, you can order beef and chicken as well.
What is on a traditional Greek Gyro?
The traditional toppings for a gyro include tzatziki sauce (a cucumber yogurt-based sauce), tomatoes, onions, pickles, and lettuce.
The only limit to what you put on your gyro is your imagination!
Tzatziki sauce can also be found in other Mediterranean dishes including soups and salads.
Is Tzatziki Healthy to Eat
Tzatziki is a yogurt-based sauce typically made with cucumbers, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and salt.
It is most commonly eaten in Greece and Turkey as a dip for pita bread or vegetables.
This sauce can be healthy if you use low-fat plain yogurt.
Gyro Variations
The original recipe calls for lamb, but beef is also a popular choice. You can even mix it up with chicken or pork to change things up a bit!
You can even make a Gryo salad if you'd prefer.
How do you Cook Gyro Meat in an Air Fryer
In a medium-sized bowl, mix together your steak, oil, and Greek seasoning.
Line your air fryer with aluminum foil. This will keep all the yummy juice and seasonings together!
Add in your seasoned steak.
Cook at 380 degrees for 8-10 minutes depending on how well you did want your steak.
While this is cooking, prepare your sauce. Peel, and then cut your cucumber in half, longwise. With a spoon, remove all of the seeds from the inside. Dice your cucumber into small pieces.
Transfer to a food processor or blender. Blend until you have a puree.
Transfer to a dishtowel or cheesecloth. Squeeze out all of the moisture as much as possible. Set aside.
In a medium-sized bowl, add in all of your sauce ingredients, including the cucumber, but not the salt. Mix well.
Add in a small amount of salt until you reach your preferred saltiness.
Once your steak is done, you can assemble your gyro.
You can roll it up or cut the pita in half and stuff your gyro. Add in lettuce first, steak to lay on the lettuce, and your seasoned onion sliced.
Serve with chips, fries, or a salad!
Enjoy!
